Quizzes Aren’t Busywork: How to Use Them to Actually Keep Students Engaged

Confetti and leaderboards aren\’t why quizzes work. The research on retrieval practice says something plainer and more useful: frequent, low-stakes quizzing changes what students remember weeks later — and a few design choices matter far more than which app you pick.

Say the word “quiz” to a class and you’ll get a groan before you get a pencil moving. Which makes it strange that quizzing is one of the most reliable engagement tools a teacher has – not because students enjoy being tested, but because of what a well-timed quiz does to attention and memory that a re-read of the chapter simply doesn’t.

My read, after going through the classroom research on this rather than the marketing copy for the quiz apps themselves, is that most advice on “engaging quizzes” focuses on the wrong variable.

It’s obsessed with leaderboards, avatars, and sound effects, and much quieter about the two things the evidence actually says matter: how often you quiz, and how little each one counts toward a grade.

What a quiz is doing to a student’s brain that rereading isn’t

The mechanism is called the testing effect, or retrieval practice, and it’s one of the more replicated findings in cognitive psychology. In a now-classic pair of experiments, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students either reread a passage repeatedly or read it once and then recall it from memory several times.

On an immediate test, the rereaders did better, unsurprisingly. A week later, the pattern flipped hard: students who had practiced recalling the material – despite reading it roughly a third as many times – remembered substantially more than those who had reread it four times over.

The part I find genuinely striking is what students predicted about their own memory. The repeated-study group was confident they’d remember the material well a week out.

They were wrong, and not by a small margin. As Roediger and Karpicke put it in their write-up, “testing is a powerful means of improving learning, not just assessing it” – and students have no intuitive sense that this is true, which is exactly why so many of them default to rereading their notes the night before an exam.

This isn’t a lab curiosity. A 2025–2026 quasi-experimental study of medical students at Kabir Medical College found that a formative quiz group scored notably higher than a no-quiz control group on a test given eight weeks later (72.3 vs. 61.7 out of 100, on average) and on their final exam (76.1 vs. 67.8).

Same lectures, same material, same instructor – the only difference was whether students had been quizzed along the way.

A 2014 meta-analysis by Rowland pooling 159 studies put the overall effect size of retrieval practice over restudying at g = 0.50, with 81% of comparisons favoring the quiz condition.

That’s a large, consistent effect for something this cheap to implement.

Frequent and low-stakes beats occasional and heavy, every time

If retrieval is the mechanism, frequency and stakes are the dials that control how much of it you get. A 2026 study tracking 37 undergraduates through ten weekly Moodle quizzes found that when students engaged mattered more than how well they initially scored: delaying the first attempt after a quiz was released was strongly linked to worse final performance, while students who attempted quizzes quickly and repeatedly did better, independent of their raw accuracy.

In other words, the quizzing habit itself was doing work that the scores weren’t capturing.

That lines up with what I’d tell any teacher weighing whether to run one big quiz every two weeks or a five-question check every class: run the small one.

It costs less prep, it costs students less anxiety per attempt, and it gives you (and them) far more data points on where the gaps actually are.

I think the single most common design mistake is treating a quiz as a mini-exam that needs to “count” – grading it heavily just reintroduces the stakes that make students dread the word in the first place, without adding much retrieval benefit you weren’t already getting from the ungraded version.

Where gamification genuinely helps – and where it quietly backfires

Game-based quiz tools didn’t invent retrieval practice, but they did make it fast to run and, for a lot of classrooms, more fun to sit through. Kahoot! alone had reached 10 million educators worldwide by August 2026, and an umbrella review of K-12 meta-analyses found that student response systems – clickers, Kahoot-style tools – produced one of the largest effects on learning of any formative assessment format studied, an effect size around SMD = 0.93.

But the same body of research is a lot less tidy than that headline number suggests. A 2025 review of gamified quizzing in language classrooms noted that “repeated use of the same quiz format can lead to a wear-out in classroom dynamics” – the novelty that drives engagement in week one is largely gone by week eight.

And a study of an undergraduate operations management course found something closer to a warning shot: sections where assessment activities were gamified with points and badges ended up with lower content knowledge, satisfaction, and course experience than the ungamified control section – not a null result, a negative one.

The researchers, writing up what they called “the dark side of narrow gamification,” pointed to a plausible reason: extrinsic rewards like points and leaderboards can crowd out the intrinsic reason to actually learn the material, especially when the game layer is bolted onto assessment rather than built into the content itself.

Test anxiety adds another wrinkle. Gamified formative assessment research on Quizizz found that competitive elements reliably boost motivation but don’t reliably reduce anxiety – sometimes the opposite, when the leaderboard turns a low-stakes check into a public ranking.

That’s a real, evidence-backed tension, not a hypothetical one: the tool that makes half your class light up can make your more anxious students tense up, and both reactions can be happening in the same room during the same five minutes.

Choosing a format: live competition, or self-paced review?

So which would you actually run: the live, projector-driven quiz where the whole class answers together and a leaderboard updates in real time, or the self-paced version students complete individually, on their own clock, with no one watching their score tick up?

I’d genuinely pick differently depending on the day – live for a quick energy reset mid-lesson, self-paced for homework-style review before a test – and I think teachers who pick one tool and use it for everything are leaving engagement on the table either way.

A weekly routine that doesn’t eat your prep time

None of this requires an overhaul. What it requires is a habit, kept deliberately small:

  • Quiz right after you teach the content, not days later. Retrieval works best when there’s something fresh to retrieve.
  • Keep it to five to eight questions. The Kabir Medical College study and most classroom-based retrieval research use short quizzes, not exams – the effect doesn’t need volume, it needs repetition.
  • Grade it for completion, not accuracy, or don’t grade it at all. This is the change most likely to lower the groan-to-pencil-moving ratio.
  • Give feedback immediately, even if it’s just “the answer was B, here’s why.” A quiz without any correction afterward wastes a chunk of its own value.
  • Rotate live and self-paced formats across the week so the novelty that drives engagement doesn’t wear out by week three.

I’ll admit a bias here: I’m skeptical of leaderboards for anything graded, and mildly skeptical of them even when ungraded, once a class has more than a couple of visibly anxious students in it.

The research doesn’t say leaderboards are bad – it says they’re a mixed bag that helps some students and stresses others, and a teacher who actually knows their class is a better judge of that trade-off than any app’s default settings.

Common questions

Does gamifying quizzes reduce test anxiety, or increase it? Both happen, depending on the student and the design. Reviews of Quizizz and Kahoot in language classrooms found motivation reliably goes up, but anxiety only goes down when the game layer is low-pressure (self-paced, ungraded, team-based); pure leaderboard competition can raise stress for anxious students even as it energizes confident ones.

Do quizzes work for subjects beyond memorization, like problem-solving or writing? The strongest, most consistent effects are on factual and conceptual recall.

For higher-order skills, retrieval practice still helps as a warm-up or check for understanding, but it’s not a substitute for extended practice – treat a quiz as the on-ramp, not the whole road.

How often is too often? The research doesn’t set a hard number, but the “wear-out” findings suggest that identical formats used every single day lose their engagement value within a few weeks. Vary the format – live one day, self-paced the next, a quick verbal round the day after – more than you vary the content.

Where I’d draw the line

The evidence for retrieval practice itself is about as solid as classroom research gets. The evidence for any particular app making that retrieval more engaging is thinner, more mixed, and more dependent on your specific students than the vendor pages let on.

If I had to bet on one lever a teacher could pull to improve engagement this term, it wouldn’t be switching quiz tools – it would be quizzing twice as often, at half the stakes, and paying attention to which format each week’s material actually calls for.
